Wednesday, April 19. Deputy County Attorney Dan South and Assistant Public Defender Kyle Ipson, "Challenges of Prosecuting and Defending Sexual Assault Cases"

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Please join PCLP for its final presentation of the year as prosecutor Dan South and defense attorney Kyle Ipson discuss, from both sides, the unique challenges of prosecuting and defending sexual assault cases.

Please join us in Room 156 and as always, pizza will be served at noon. 

 

**April 19th is also Dine Out for Safety - the annual community outreach and fundraising event for the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault (SACASA). Take a break from studies and have lunch or dinner at one of more than 20 participating restaurants to support this great cause!

Wednesday, April 12. Judge Patricia Starr, "Addressing Mental Illness in the Criminal Justice System - Competency, Comprehensive Mental Health Courts, and Civil Commitment"

Patricia Starr was appointed as a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge in March of 2014; she also served as a Commissioner on that Court from 2011 through 2014. Judge Starr is currently assigned to the Lower Court Appeals Department. She previously served in the Civil, Criminal, and Probate/Mental Health Departments.

Prior to taking the bench, Judge Starr worked for three years as a Capital Staff Attorney through the Arizona Death Penalty Judicial Assistance Project, assisting trial judges statewide with death penalty cases. Judge Starr served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Arizona Attorney General and a Deputy County Attorney for Maricopa County, handling both trial and appellate matters, including criminal, civil, sexually violent person, mental health, and capital cases. Judge Starr also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jefferson L. Lankford of the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One. 

However, most importantly, Judge Starr is a double wildcat, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences in 1987 and her JD in 1992.
