A talk on Criminal Justice Reform led by the American Friends Service Committee

Location: This event will be livestreamed on Zoom.  It will also be livestreamed into room 168. 

Please join us in welcoming the American Friends Service Committee. An organization that advocates for policy changes in the criminal justice system such as halting prison expansion and privatization and sentencing reform. Ms. Fealk and Mr. Scharnboneau will be presenting on policy advocacy for criminal justice reform in Arizona, providing insights and examples on the process including barriers and successes, opponents and supporters, and the importance of implementation and accountability. They will uplift bills from the past few years that have passed to show how policy works and its intersection with the legal world.

Ms. Fealk's work focuses on research into humane policy regarding re-entry, sentencing structures, and public health. She is currently the program coordinator. Mr. Scharnboneau is a legislative committee member with the Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice. He collaborates, drafts policy, and lobbies at the Arizona State Legislature in support of meaningful criminal justice reform.

Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life: James Comey

The Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life series is an ongoing effort at Arizona Law to create a national forum for discussion of critical and timely ethical issues in criminal prosecution. 

About James Comey: 
Since graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1982 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1985, James Comey has been a prosecutor, defense lawyer, general counsel, teacher, writer, and leader. He most recently served in government as Director of the FBI from 2013-2017. His best-selling book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership" was published in 2018 and made into a 2020 Showtime television limited-series. His second book, "Saving Justice: Truth, Transparency, and Trust," was published in January. He is currently working at Columbia University Law School as a Senior Research Scholar and Leader-in-Residence.

Major Justin Oshana, Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life.

September 15th, 12:00-1:15 PM

Justin Oshana was the lead Army prosecutor in United States v. Bergdahl, the court-martial of Private Bowe Bergdahl for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. He also was a defense attorney in United States v. Hasan, the capital court-martial of Major Nidal Hasan for the 2009 Fort Hood shootings.  Oshana is currently an Assistant United States Attorney in Philadelphia and a Major in the Army Reserves. The Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life series is part of an ongoing effort at Arizona Law to create a national forum for discussion of critical and timely ethical issues in criminal prosecution.

Professor Andy Silverman, Paying One's Debt to Society: Reality or Myth?

People who have criminal convictions face a number of obstacles. Many offenders feel they have a lifetime sentence because of the barriers they have to endure. However, re-entry has finally become an issue within the criminal justice system. There are statutory provisions that can help people better deal with their conviction. Professor Silverman's talk will explore the barriers offenders face and the statutes they can take advantage of. He will also talk about marijuana expungement after the passage of Proposition 207. This event is co-sponsored by the National Lawyers Guild Arizona Law Chapter.
